Mercy and Mooie

**WARNING: Graphic pictures ahead. Proceed at risk to your emotional state**

While perusing Bark-n-Blog, I came across the horrifying stories of Mercy and Mooie. Who, you ask.

Mercy - a 10 month old "pitbull mix girl who had apparently been beaten, dragged behind a car, stabbed, chemicals and gasoline poured on her and burned, then stuck in a tree left to die." A passerby found her and brought her to Operation Kindness (a non-profit organization dedicated to the care of homeless and unwanted dogs and cats in a no-kill environment). Mercy fought a seemingly loosing battle and her heart gave out on April 23, 2006. A memorial service was held for her on April 29, 2006. Mercy's tormentor - a 21-year-old was jailed on April 27, 2006 and charged with her torture and death. If you would like to read more about Mercy's tragic story please visit the Operation Kindness website.

Mooie - a four month old puppy - had enough acid poured on her that it burnt nearly 98% of her
body. The poor thing tried to lick the acid off of her body and ended up burning the inside of her mouth. She was found by two children as she staggered on to the backyard of the house she was tortured in. (There are varying accounts of how she was found). The vets had to immediately euthanize her because it was the humane thing to do. Her tormentor is still at large. For details and more information please visit Pasado's SafeHaven website.

Why am I drawing your attention to such a disturbing story? Because it needs to be shared. What can I even say, except I'm so sorry Mercy & Mooie that you had meet such a horrible end at the hands of some humans.
Larry Powell puts it into better words.

I hope Mercy and Mooie are happy at The Rainbow Bridge.

Thank you for reading.

It is indeed a dark side to human nature for such perpetrators of torture to exist.
Fortunately you do have wonderful organisations dedicated to caring for these animals and to stand up for their rights and champion a sense of community responsibility.

These deeds are horrific, but they also suggest to me the need for an official body to monitor and receive community feedback and to have a high public profile that is vigilant in ensuring communities are accountable for animal rights and to prosecute those involved in any form of cruelty.

In Australia we have The Royal Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (RSPCA) and it has very high profile. The primary objective of the RSPCA is to protect animals from cruelty and neglect by enforcing existing law. RSPCA Inspectors are warranted to enforce the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (POCTAA) in Victoria. In so doing they are the only non-government officers with the power to lay information (charges) under this act.

RSPCA Inspectors also spend a lot of their time preparing animal cruelty cases and attending court. In 2004 - 2005 a total of 45 defendants were taken to court by RSPCA Inspectors under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to answer charges relating to cases of cruelty. The RSPCA was successful in 43 of the 45 cases heard in this period, with a total of 172 charges laid; this was a success rate of 95.5%.

The RSPCA in Victoria receives approximately 10,000 complaints regarding cruelty to animals each year. Currently up to 80 of these cases will result in charges being laid under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
best wishes

Thanks Vee - very awful but real. I think these crimes need to be vigourously prosecuted. I wonder what the best preventions would be?
